Year-end summary

AMERICAN MUSLIM PHYSICIANS OF INDIAN ORIGIN

AMPIUSA

Shaheen Nagar clinic

This out-patient clinic and 20 bed short stay unit is projected to see over 130,000 patients by the end of the year. it is one of the busiest clinics of its kind in the Hyderabad area. While in India I attended a national seminar on health NGOs in Bangaluru organized by Azim Premji’s group and learned that the Shaheen Nagar clinic that we are funding completely may be the one of the most comprehensive and busy clinics in the country.

50% of the beneficiaries experienced improved mental and emotional health after receiving good quality primary health services over a period of time.

A GAME CHANGER

Inpatient 20 bed short stay unit aka tropical disease ward

As you may recall we decided to fund the construction and running of a 20-bed unit on the second floor of the structure.
This unit has been completely full since its opening and has proven to be a game changer. Patients from Dengue fever to Typhoid and a myriad other illnesses that do not require prolonged care are being helped in this unit. Since its opening, it has had 100% occupancy.

There was even a mini epidemic of cholera in slum schools due to contaminated water. We were able to contain it as well.

Lactation Management Centers

In order to promote Breastfeeding at the community level, HHF in collaboration with AMPI USA have set up initially 5 lactation management centers at Khyam Nagar, Rajendra Nagar, Shaheen Nagar, Wadi e Mustafa & Pahadi Sherif with aim to provide privacy to mothers for feeding their babies, while they come for treatment and also to promote the concept of Breastfeeding at the community level so that mothers are able to express milk for longer periods of time to their babies.

Impact

Impact on economic health of the community around our clinic.

Unlike IMRC our care to our clients is entirely free. This free care has a significant impact on the economic health of the slums. A survey done of those who use are clinic reveal

1/3 had gross income of less that Rs 1,000/month ($12).
To our surprise 72% of beneficiaries were migrant populations from neighboring states like Karnataka, Maharashtra and northern states like UP, Jharkhand and Bihar. This makes them highly vulnerable with little access to affordable health care.
There were a number of Rohingya refugees. We do not have an exact count of how many.

81% of the beneficiaries saved Rs 2,500- 3,000 per month. 45% of the beneficiaries said the Out-of-Pocket health expenses saved on account of free primary health care services has helped them provide better nutrition, education and transport facilities to their children for schools.

Reduced Loans and interest Payments. 65% of the beneficiaries said they no longer required to borrow money on high interest after receiving free primary health care services.

Need to get the program to the next level and clone the program in other parts of Telangana and other states in India.
